Wednesday 29 August 2012

all in a day's work...

- building cubby houses with freshly washed blankets
- scribbling on bodies only to be revealed at bath time
- sticking stickers in 'you're not allowed to stick those there' places
- finding glue sticks and deciding to smear it over toys
- jamming keys in locks
- unravelling sticky tape only to be trodden on in the hall way
- making mud pies after I just cleaned the patio area

...just the usual toddler happenings.

weekending...eat your heart out donna hay

Since strawberries are on sale at the moment and they seem to be super popular in our house I decided to try this donna hay recipe from her latest magazine (NB: this is not a sponsored post).

strawberry, mascarpone and almond tray tart
  1. sift
  2. blend
  3. mix
  4. combine
  5. refrigerate
  6. roll
  7. refrigerate
  8. blind bake
  9. make strawberry syrup
  10. stir, boil, cool completely
  11. whisk, add, spoon
  12. decorate & drizzle

It's not her birthday, but this little one sung 'happy birthday to me...' anyway.

Eat your heart out donna hay!

A ritual. A single photo or two - no words - capturing a moment from the week. A simple, special, extraordinary moment. A moment I want to pause, savor and remember.

bargin buys...

Yesterday’s errands were essential in preparation for the next few weeks.  We have some special days coming up; birthday’s for family and friends and let’s not forget father’s day.  Shopping for clothes wasn’t on the to-do list but I couldn’t resist picking up a few bargins and if you are anything like me you probably love a good bargin too.  Yesterday I found a few good bargins, some items were $10 and under and some were $5 or less!!
Just in case you were wondering this is not a sponsored post.
The trouble with being the third in line is that you inherit hand-me-downs from your siblings.  Now there’s nothing wrong with hand-me-downs but sometimes it’s nice to have some new threads of your very own.  I bought these items in larger sizes to allow for plenty of room for growing and they will see baby flutterbug through the cooler days of Spring.

Photo 1: trade secret : 2 full body cotton jumpsuits $10 a piece, long sleeve baby suit and pants set ($10) and a long sleeve super cute elephant shirt for a fiver!
Photo 2: target: long sleeve and long pants, two piece set under $12.
Photo 3: target: long sleeve and long pants,2 piece set under $5!
Of course I couldn't resist a bargin for myself.  Well not at these prices anyway.

Photo 1: tempt: orange stripe top under $10; blue and green V neck tee under $5 each!

Photo 2: trade secret: esprit top (Ahem...) under $30 (original price was $50; still a bargin I guess) and navy striped top was $10 on tag.  I went through the check out and it was only $5!!

Photo 3: close up of esprit button on top.

Below are some party decorations for little miss flutterby who's turning 2.

Photo 1: 99c store: tissue paper for birthday decorations that I am yet to make...more on this later.

Photo 2: spotlight: princess party decorations; she requested a princess party.  I am not sure where she got this idea from since we don't really have any princess things in this house or watch any princessy shows but she was quite definite about what she wanted.

Photo 3: spotlight: 2 cake tins and cake decorations...more on this later.  Miss flutterby wants ....'a princess castle cake please mummy.' Where do these ideas come from? Oh my this little one is growing up too fast.

And, lastly, some yarn from spotlight to finish off some projects and start a new one hopefully.

until tomorrow...

errands, errands, errands...

These little delights were last on my 'to do/to get' list today.  They were bargin that I couldn't resist, 2 punnets for $4.  Speaking of bargins, I spent much of today driving around getting organised for upcoming birthdays and father's day etc., hence the late post.  There was a little bit of spoiling for the mama and the bubba (of the low budget kind) as well.  More on this tomorrow.

P.S. A certain little person devoured a whole punnet all by herself!

weekending

Many months ago we planted our very own strawberry patch.  As soon as these sweet babies settled into their new home, my little ones suggested that now they were planted we could eat the strawberries.  It took some explaining.  We knew that this was going to be a lesson in observation and patience, a lot of patience.  Almost every day they eagerly check the strawberry patch.  When we have visitors they invite them to go outside and show our friends their strawberry garden. We have even caught them at times turning on the tank water tap to water the garden without any prompting from us.

I am delighted to announce that we have had some beautiful fruit, however, I have not been quick enough to grab the camera as they are devoured by the little people....well one person in particular.  The other little person declares he will eat strawberries when he's a big boy, not now.  As soon as the red berry appears it disappears so quickly that I haven't even tried one yet! Today we spotted our biggest strawberry so far; somehow I was lucky enough to get this shot and yes, my little flutterby loved eating it.

happy weekending to you xo.

table talk

Many, many years ago before we were married (Ahem), we moved in together and like most couples who move in together for the first time, we possessed little furniture.  Our smallish flat, gratefully provided to us through work, was our first place together.  We made do with the furniture we had.  We literally had a round dining table and two beds.  Thankfully, good friends felt sorry for us and loaned us some of their furniture so we had a couch to sit on.  We ‘loaned’ their furniture for 3 years! Yes, they are very good friends.  Anyway, a marriage and three more house moves later we purchased our own home and a desire to buy a dining table.  Well we bought the one we wanted a beautiful 9 piece set and spent ‘000’s, yes, I had dreams of entertaining but with a busy work life we really only used it at Christmas time when family came over.  Some years later, two toddlers and a baby arrived, and now I cringe every time those little hands rub on my nice suede chairs.

While I love this table it currently resides in a separate room because it is so big.  Believe me we do use this table a lot but funnily enough not at meal times when it’s just us.  At meal times it is quite overwhelming to sit at because it’s often just me and two little ones.  We’ve often ended up eating around a kids table, perfect for them but a bit squishy for me.
Recently I have found myself staring outside at our old round table that sits on our patio.  Yes, this old girl came with us on our journey through the outback and now here.  Sadly she has been exposed to the elements and she desperately needs some love and attention.  Today, with the help of another good friend, I moved the table inside.  It’s not exactly how I imagined, for now I have to cover the top with a table cloth, stare at ugly green paint and I have to use our ‘good’ chairs which don’t really suit, but, she is the perfect size, not too big and not too small.

As we gather around her once again this time there will be some new little voices and sticky fingers to contend with, but for now I don’t think she’ll mind and yes… I have plans for this old girl.

playdough

McKenzie’s Play Dough
Ingredients
2 cups plain flour
4 tbs McKenzie’s cream of Tartar
2 tbs cooking oil
1 cup salt
Food colouring
2 cups water

Mix the ingredients in a saucepan, stir over medium heat for 3 to 5 minutes or until the mixture congeals.

Tips
  • I never use 1 cup of salt.  I have never had a problem with my toddlers eating play dough so I always use less.
  • I add the food colouring after I have made the dough.  This way I can split the mixture in parts.  You do need to wear disposable gloves if you don’t like getting food colouring on your hands.  For some reason I never remember to wear gloves.
  •  Make sure dough is cool before putting in fridge.
  • Wrap dough in a medium size freezer bags for easy storage in the fridge.
  • I always have red, blue and yellow food colouring in the pantry - these are your basic primary colours.  See below for more on colours.
  • Colours …
o   Blue, yellow, red are the primary colours.  You cannot mix colours to make these colours.  Some other variations include; Red and yellow = orange;  Blue and red = purple; Blue and yellow = green

the kindness of a stranger

A sick mama, a crying unwell baby and two unhappy toddlers with runny noses....we must have looked a sight lining up at the check-out this morning grasping essential cold and flu supplies. However, it never ceases to amaze me the small kind act someone can do for another.  A stranger in line offered for me to go ahead of him.  I politely declined but he insisted and he even wheeled my pram for me and picked up the bottle of lemonade that escaped my basket at the same time.  So even though I feel quite ordinary today, I just have to think back to this mornings encounter and the kindness of a stranger.

Thank you kind man at Coles, you made my day.

Monday 6 August 2012

this morning...

  • unsettled babe in arms so typing blog one-handed
  • toddlers at home sick
  • washing out
  • folding and ironing done
  • baked packet-cake muffins because that's about all the cooking I can manage at the moment
  • had about three coffee's already...
...much the same as any other day really.
Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead xo.
