my green boost juice recipe

I was helping my friend juice this morning and feeling rather inspired I came home and pulled out my juicer (from the dark depths of my cupboard) and reinvigorated my old machine.

flutterbymama's green boost juice recipe

carrot
celery
handful of spinach leaves
ginger root
½ tsp Spirulina
¼ tsp turmeric powder

Okay, once juiced it doesn't look that green but close your eyes and you'll be pleasantly surprised.  The ginger is very warming and this sensation is a good distraction from the actual colour of this juice.

To integrate into a daily green juice boost ritual and to cut down on preparation time I would cut up/divide everything prior and place your desired proportions into snap lock bags to be ready to grab from the fridge.  I also like to save the pulp for my garden compost.

happy juicing!

52 Weeks of Grateful: book week

Last week just flew by and before I realised it was Monday again.  Much of our days are just about preparing for the day ahead, getting through the day, keeping to routine and winding down the evening with dinner, baths, stories and bed.  We read books almost every night to our babes.  They love stories.  Last week was also book week and to celebrate book week it was dress up day at Day Care.

The spiderman and fairy costume were previous sale purchases and have been worn many times already.  I recently purchased the lion outfit from Crazy Clarks for $14.  The outfit is for size 3-5 so there is plenty of growing room.

Wishing you a good start to the week.

hand-made

There is something nice about hand-made don't you think? L'l miss flutterby is having her 3rd birthday soon.  In preparation for the event I have been researching and sourcing ideas from the internet.  To keep cost to a minimum I decided to make the invitations (this post) and the decorations (will post on this in a few weeks).  After sourcing card stock from our local newsagent and free images from the internet I designed the layout in a Word document.

It was easy to format the images by using the cropping and text box tools to get the placement of the images and text just right.  There was a bit of cutting involved (pink frill template) however this was completed in front of the TV while the babes were sleeping and before I knew it they were all cut.

To make the holes in the frill template I used Fiskars small hole punch (a bargin buy from Spotlight).  By the image, you can guess what she wants as the theme.  I figure you only turn three once and I only have one daughter so it's nice to go to the effort (time permitting of course).

52 Weeks of Grateful: beautiful friend

photo from 2010
We are so grateful to have such a beautiful friend, who despite the major struggles and set backs that life throws at her she continues to fight back with such amazing strength - she is one in a trillion and we love her to the moon and back.

weekending...in our garden

The change in weather is prompting some new growth in our little vegie garden which is providing a renewed interest by everyone.  So far our baby kale is doing well.  This variety is supposed to be suitable for salads.  I am looking forward to trying it.

Most of our sugar loaf were attacked by slugs.  This one (below) is a late bloomer and I am hoping the bugs stay away with the warmer weather.

I haven't grown mint in this garden bed before but it it's anything like our last lot it will thrive.

Our basil looks healthy. It has always thrived in this garden bed and we look forward to adding it to our meals throughout the spring and summer months.

We still have some lemons on our tree.  I am about to pick the last lot then the tree needs a trim and a good feed as it's looking a bit sad.

Now that the weather is a little warmer I picked up some packet flower seeds and plan to sprinkle them in a different garden bed this afternoon and we'll see what pops up in a few weeks.

How is your garden at the moment?

Backyard Beetle

During the week we discovered this beautiful beetle in our backyard.  We have lived in the same place for almost 10 years now and we have never seen a beetle like this before.

We searched the internet for its name however we resorted to sending a message and photo to the Queensland Museum for assistance.  I will keep you updated if we receive a reply.

The kids took 'him' to Show and Share at Day Care however he is far too beautiful to be contained and we set him free in the afternoon.

52 Weeks of Grateful: pecan pie

This pecan pie represents more than just a pastry on a plate.  Once a month a couple of girlfriends and I gather for brunch at a favourite local cafĂ©.  This pie represents time with friends, time for self and time to reflect on the small joys of life as a working mama.  I love this time, this gathering and this connection with my friends.  I also wish I had the recipe for this delicious pecan pie.

weekending...

Yes, it's hard to believe, but this is winter in Queensland! It was so hot this morning that running through the hose and wearing a hat was a must.

Happy weekending to you.

road testing: cauliflower quiche recipe

As you know I like to try new recipes and share them with you.  This cauliflower quiche recipe from petite-kitchen (posted Monday the 5th August) is super healthy, quite adaptable and it can be made ahead of time.  I made my version below, however, photos by petite-kitchen are so much better.

I definitely have my eye on some more recipes from petite-kitchen

berrylicious smoothie recipe

It's hard to believe it is late winter as the weather is simply beautiful here.  There is so much colour surrounding us at this time of year.  Inspired by all the pink, purple and blue berry hues I decided to experiment and make a berry smoothie.

Flutterbymama's Berrylicious Smoothie

1 cup low fat milk (approx.)
2 handfuls of fresh or frozen mixed berries
1 heaped tablespoon of yoghurt (low sugar)
1 heaped tablespoon of protein powder

Blitz the heck out of it.

Kitchen Note: This smoothie has a thick consistency.

Enjoy!

Thursday 1 August 2013

Hello August...

Hello Dear Friends,
It has indeed been some time since my last post.  I haven't forgotten you and I should have dropped a line or two to let you know that life has just been busy.  The truth is for a while there I felt huge pressure to post every day because I didn't want to let you down.  I realised this was an unreasonable expectation I placed on myself and it was only just adding more stress to my days as a busy working wife and mum of three.  After my little one (above) caught a virus I just needed to focus on looking after him (he's better now) and as it seems...have a break from the online world. While in disconnection mode I realised I missed this space. I missed taking photos and I missed you.  I am really hoping be around a bit more.

Thanks for so much for understanding and I will see you soon.
